A difficult Engine Extraction

Today we removed this four cylinder Perkins D4203 from the sailing vessel Delia.
The D4203 is made from cast iron and is extremely heavy. Our initial plan of lifting it by hand into the midships of the vessel then using a HIAB to remove it through the midships hatch was quickly disbanded when we realised the weight involved. So instead we positioned the HIAB crane in two separate positions to achieve the lift.

The first position was coming in on a steep angle from the companion way entrance to lift the engine off its mounts with a chain block attached to the HIAB. The clearance between the HIAB and the deck-head was minimal so we had to be very careful and move very slowly so as to protect the woodwork of the vessel.

Once we had the engine lifted as high as achievable on the chain block we then connected a come-along winch between the engine and the mast support pole. We could then crank on the come-along to move the engine forward toward the hatch while releasing evenly on the chain block.

Once the Engine was as close to the midships hatch we repositioned the HIAB crane portside and lifted the engine straight up and out. Followed by the gearbox, bell housing, flywheel and other heavy parts.

Now we will send the engine off to our engine re-conditioner for a rebuild and paint.
